Woolwich Township Supports Climate Change Mitigation Strategy
Woolwich, ON – On June 1st, Woolwich Council endorsed the TransformWR strategy, as the community climate change mitigation strategy for the Township of Woolwich. The TransformWR strategy identifies 78 actions to reduce our local greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% by the year 2050.
Council has directed staff to develop an implementation plan to carry out required actions identified in the strategy.
Council also endorsed in principle an interim absolute community greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target of 50 per cent by 2030. Recognizing that the bold and immediate local actions in the TransformWR strategy are expected to achieve a 30 per cent reduction by 2030, Council emphasizes that bold and immediate actions from the provincial and federal government will also be required to reach this deeper reduction target.
“Woolwich Township acknowledges the value in not only reducing greenhouse gas but also moving towards an equitable, prosperous and resilient low-carbon economy”, said Mayor Sandy Shantz.
Achieving our targets will require bold and immediate action from everyone across the community. All of us, as municipalities, businesses, organizations, and individuals, have important roles to play.
