Woolwich Township and Beyond Housing Make Plans for a New Affordable/Low Income Housing Development

Woolwich, ON – At the Council meeting on March 21st, 2023, Woolwich Council directed staff to proceed with the plans to develop the property at 28 South Street with Menno Homes, now known as Beyond Housing.

The lands at 28 South Street formerly known as the Kiwanis House lands, were declared surplus last year with Woolwich Council expressing support for the lands to be developed as an Affordable Housing development. After a transparent request proposals process, the Township is pleased to announce that Beyond Housing will be developing the property with 24 back-to-back townhouses, with 75% of rents below 80% mid-market rent.

“Woolwich Council is invested in innovative and forward-thinking solutions for affordable housing in our community, said Mayor Sandy Shantz.  With Beyond Housing’s continued investment to build quality affordable housing in Woolwich, we are taking a positive step forward to ensuring that every Woolwich resident has a place to call home.”

Dan Driedger, Executive Director at Beyond Housing commented, “We are happy to be at this stage of creating more much-needed affordable housing in Elmira. The commitment by Woolwich Township to make this possible, both by staff and council, has been key. While there is still much work to do before we will be able to start construction, we are eager to keep moving forward so that we can create new affordable places for people to call home in Woolwich Township.”

This development will help support the growing need for affordable housing in our community and is a positive step to move this initiative forward.
