Summer Patio Seating, Mill Street, Elmira

Woolwich, ON – To continue supporting businesses impacted by the ongoing pandemic, Council for the Township of Woolwich has approved outdoor patio seating again this summer on Mill Street, in Elmira. A portion of the patio will be available for members of the public to use at their leisure. The public community seating area will offer picnic tables, umbrellas and chairs and will be filled with greenery, such as trees and flowers.

Members of the Downtown Elmira Business Improvement area have come together to make this all possible. The local business community have volunteered their time, expertise, and supply of goods to make the public space a comfortable area for all to enjoy.

“The summer patio seating on Mill Street aims to support downtown businesses by offering a comfortable and welcoming pedestrian area, which will bring the community together. Patrons of local food establishments can enjoy their take-out meal or ice cream on the patio right downtown.” – Jonathon Clay, Chair, Downtown Elmira BIA.

Once it is safe to do so, the road will be closed from Arthur Street to the rear parking lot entrance of TD Canada Trust. The open portion of Mill Street will be converted to two-way traffic and will be accessible from Memorial Avenue, much like last year. Township staff will work closely with the Downtown Elmira BIA to improve the public realm of the community seating space. The timing of the street closure is dependent on the lifting of COVID-related restrictions.

“It is great to see the community come together again this year to support fellow small business owners. The pandemic has been hard for everyone, but especially on our restaurants and greater tourism and hospitality sectors. I encourage you to support our local businesses as much as possible!” – Jenna Morris, Economic Development and Tourism Officer.

Once it is safe to do so, we welcome locals to enjoy the new public seating area and encourage you to follow Public Health’s guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19. If you are interested in opening or expanding a patio space, please contact the Township’s Economic Development and Tourism Department.
