Grand Opening of a New River Access Point in West Montrose

Woolwich, ON – A partnership along the Grand River between the Township of Woolwich, the West Montrose Family Camp, and Regional Tourism Organization 4 has created a new river access point in West Montrose, Woolwich.  The grand opening for this river access point is scheduled for June 29th, 2022.

After a successful pilot in 2021, the river access point in West Montrose has become official. The new river access point is number 204, which represents the kilometer mark from the mouth of the Grand River. The river mouth is located at the Port Maitland Lighthouse (Lake Erie) and strategic locations are marked upstream in ascending kilometer order.

“The Township of Woolwich is so proud of this collaborative partnership, and the efforts taken to establish this new river access point.  This exciting opportunity allows water users an unique amenity that connects them to a fun outdoor experience”, said Mayor Sandy Shantz.

Tubers, kayakers, canoers, and other water users can access the new point via the West Montrose Family Campground located at 6344 Line 86, West Montrose, ON N0B 2V0. Open from mid-May to mid-October, the access has ample parking and green space for groups small and large.

“We are excited to celebrate the Grand Opening of this new river access point! We are very grateful for RTO4 and the Family Camp for their partnership in creating this space!” – Jenna Morris, Economic Development and Tourism Officer, Township of Woolwich.

Being situated at the West Montrose Family Camp, users of the river access also have the option to picnic, swim in the pool, and use the other amenities the property has to offer. The public should sign in at the front office to be directed to the parking and/or offloading area. Additionally, users are asked to drive slowly through the campground as pedestrians, including young children, frequent the grounds.

“RTO4 is excited for this creative partnership between the Township of Woolwich and the West Montrose Family Campground to bring a safe new addition to the access point system along the greater Grand River Watershed. The Grand River is an important natural heritage asset in our Region that connects our communities and deserves our continued attention. We hope to see you there!” Tristin Vogel, RTO4 – Destination Project Manager: Waterloo Region and the Grand River

As part of the event, guests are invited for a self-guided float from the Steel Bridge on Township Rd. 60 to the Campground. A food truck and live music will be onsite for all to enjoy.
