Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT)
About MAT
The Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) is a 4 per cent per room per night fee imposed on accommodation rentals fewer than 30 days. The 4% fee applies to stays at hotels, motels, motor hotels, lodges, inns, resorts, bed and breakfasts, or other lodging including those sold online. The Township began collecting MAT revenues on July 1, 2019.
MAT Revenue Distribution?
Revenues from MAT are split as follows:
- 50% to Explore Waterloo Region
- 40% to Township of Woolwich
- 10% to Region of Waterloo
How MAT is used
In March 2025, a MAT Administration Policy was developed to guide how MAT revenues collected by the Township of Woolwich are reinvested into the local tourism industry. MAT funding requests will be presented to Council on an annual basis to determine priority projects and programs throughout the year. MAT funding requests will also be accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the year for any tourism opportunities that were not available during the annual allocation of funding period.

The Woolwich Way – Funding Streams
Through the 2025 annual allocation of funding, approved by Council, the Economic Development and Tourism division is introducing two tourism funding streams – The Woolwich Way – Destination Development Fund and The Woolwich Way – Marketing Material Fund.
